Description: In keeping with the world’s increasing sensitivity to history and culture, there are more and more examples of historical artifacts being repatriated to their places of origin. One important case is the return of the a-bombed cross to the Urakami Cathedral in Nagasaki. After World War II, the cross was brought to the US by an American marine, and he donated it to the Peace Resource Center (PRC) at Wilmington College in Wilmington, Ohio. The director of the Center, Tanya Maus, was instrumental in the repatriation, and she will share the story of this remarkable event. This a-bombed cross is not only reminding us of the past, but it is continuing to touch our present by creating new social and political networks resulting in relationships of healing.

Tanya Maus has a PhD in modern Japanese history from the University of Chicago. At Wilmington College in Wilmington, Ohio, she teaches courses in the history of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki as well as on Japanese imperialism in East Asia. Since 2015, she has been the director of the Peace Resource Center (PRC) in Wilmington, Ohio. Her work is dedicated to raising awareness of the danger of nuclear war, which is exactly the mission of the PRC’s founder, Barbara Reynolds, a lifelong Quaker peace activist. The PRC holds the Barbara Reynolds Memorial Archives, an internationally famous historical collection, and it is the goal of Director Maus to make its contents widely available to the public.
